It made a difference for us. Our master bedroom is upstairs in a tri-level home. A couple years ago, it was continuously HOT in our room! So we installed a window air conditioning unit. When Dean first conducted an energy audit on our home, he discovered that air was leaking like a sieve. We had the equivalent of a 4-foot by 4-foot hole in our home. It was like a large window was just open all of the time. Dean used a thermal imaging camera to determine where the leaks were the worst and thank goodness it wasn't actually through our windows. The energy audit showed us that air sealing our home would make the biggest difference, which is basically filling in all of the hidden gaps between your walls, ceiling and floors. Then we had a radiant barrier installed in our attic and insulated the access hatch. Both of those projects cost us about $4,000, which is much less than the $10,000 price-tag for new windows.
What a change! Now it is so much more comfortable in our bedroom. We never have to turn on our window A/C unit any more. Our electric bills are much lower. We've paid less than $30 a month in the summer, even with an in-ground pool. The money we're saving on electric bills is paying for our energy efficient upgrades. When you factor in the Energy Tax Incentive, it's even that much more affordable.
